Dan Gonzalez: Music
Son of the Ground
(Dan Gonzalez)
I was born between the corn made fences
In the shadows of the stalks that dash the fields
I was sworn to walk the rows and know these trenches
For the miles of lines that run unended
For my father’s pride from which I’ve descended
I am the son of the ground
Of the rain falling down
I am the child of summer
I am tethered to the wind that brings the weather in again
I am the son of the ground
I have cursed the droughts that burn and plunder
And turn the greenest fields to brittle brown
But I have learned to praise the gods that make the thunder
For they’ve the power to put me under
To the whims of the earth I have surrendered
I am the son of the ground
Of the rain falling down
I am the child of summer
I am tethered to the wind that brings the weather in again
I am the son of the ground
I have stayed to live these days and seasons
And paid in sweat for harvest moons
But I will age and lose these rows to those beneath me
And return to the place where life grows easy
To be one with the earth that used to feed me
I am the son of the ground
Of the rain falling down
I am the child of summer
I am tethered to the wind that brings the weather in again
I am the son of the ground
